Christians and Christendom were under threat from knights who were violent, feared and destructive, from non-Christian invaders and from original sin which condemned good and bad alike to hell. The code of chivalry had been corrupted by vainglory and those who lived by that code were impotence in the face of violence. Desensitised and brutal warrior knights were offered a way to change and to find salvation. Gawain was the typical warrior knight and foil to Perceval who followed the spiritual path of the quest through meditation and contemplation. In another version of the story the Adam-like figure of the chaste Perceval became the messianic 'Good Knight' through a developing relationship with the feminine divine within, overcame death, saved Christendom and became its leader. Arthur's adventures illustrated many facets of the quest but he declined to engage in it. He only wanted back the power he had lost and fell into decline as a result. Lancelot illustrated the spiritual wasteland consequent upon breaking the covenant with the feminine divine by loving a mortal woman. With some exceptions and variations, the continuators refuted these propositions, especially the notion of the divine as feminine and the criticism of papal authority which they claimed was derived from succession rather than spiritual practice. They saw women as devils or fairies and a woman's love as preventing a knight from achieving his destiny.
